Electric cars are just the beginning
There’s a whole lot of hype about electric cars at the moment and most of it is coming from Tesla with its gorgeous line of electric vehicles. The Prius has also proven to be in high demand around the world. But there’s still a long way to go in terms of electrified transportation.
Even though the current economic condition is bad, new plug-in electric cars are being introduced regularly at prices which are much higher than regular cars. While people were willing to pay the additional cost when fuel was at an all-time high, with fuel being so cheap now, no one is willing to pay a $10,000 premium just to drive an electric car.
Very few people are showing any interest in electric vehicles at the moment and if this is to change in the near future, something drastic will need to be done. There are a lot of speed bumps up ahead for electric cars and to say that the death of petrol or diesel engines is near right now will be a little premature. Perhaps in another 10 to 15 years!
Autonomous Self-Driving Cars
Another technology which is catching on quickly is autonomous cars. As outrageous as it may sound, this technology isn’t too far away from becoming a part of our day to day lives. As AI keeps on improving, autonomous cars keep getting safer. And with this, the likelihood of them coming onto public streets keeps on increasing.
What’s more, people are more than happy to give up control of the steering wheel so that they can use their smartphones or laptops in the car. It will reduce stress and chaos on the streets. Passengers will be able to go further and travel more efficiently with this autonomous technology. Daily commutes will no longer be so hectic and the traffic on the streets would no longer be an issue.
While you can’t expect this technology to hit the streets in full force for the next 20-25 years at least, you can rest assured that it exists and that there are people working on making it happen. Those cars you saw in movies like Total Recall, i-Robot, Minority Report, etc. may not be as outlandish as you would have imagined them to be a few years ago. Whatever the future of the automotive industry has in-store, you can rest assured it’s going to be fantastic.
